How wide should a canoe rack be?
because the typical width of the canoe is 36 inches at its widest point ( where it is not supported by bars, but still is important) you need at least 72 inches. We have a pair of 78 inch wide bars that work well. Your only alternative with a shorter bar is to lap one canoe over the other and tie well.

To tie the canoe to the vehicle you’ll want to use four 12-foot straps with cam buckels. Two of the straps will go across the hull of the canoe and secure the canoe to the roof rack. The two remaining straps will secure the two ends of the canoe to the frame or to the bumpers of the vehicle.

How do you transport long timber?
Bundle long boards If you’re carrying a large load of long timber, don’t rest it on a raised gate, as it can’t hold that kind of weight. Start by laying out two or more ratchet straps along the bottom of the ute bed, then load the longest and heaviest pieces of timber over the straps.
Is canoeing harder than kayaking?
While a canoe is undoubtedly harder to capsize than a kayak — though they’re both pretty stable, honestly — a kayak has the advantage of being able to be righted in the event of a rollover. In general, canoes are wider and more stable than kayaks, but kayaks are faster and easier to maneuver.
Are bow and stern straps necessary?
Longer kayaks (12–18 feet) should probably get bow and stern straps to keep them from catching side winds. Especially if they are lighter weight materials like fiberglass or kevlar. The longer length gives side winds more leverage to push your car around or crack your kayak.
